Arnaldi stuns Rublev at Roland-Garros
Unheralded Italian Matteo Arnaldi has caused a major upset at Roland-Garros, defeating sixth seed Andrey Rublev in straight sets to reach the second week of a Grand Slam for the first time.
The 20-year-old Arnaldi, ranked 104th in the world, played the match of his life to topple Rublev 7-6(6) 6-2 6-4 on Friday.
It was a stunning result for Arnaldi, who had never before faced a top-10 opponent. He will now face Marin Cilic in the fourth round.
Rublev, the 2022 Erste Bank Open champion, was the heavy favorite coming into the match. But Arnaldi was unfazed, playing with confidence and aggression from the start.
Arnaldi broke Rublev's serve twice in the first set and held on to win the tiebreaker. He then raced through the second set, breaking Rublev's serve twice more.
Rublev fought back in the third set, but Arnaldi was too strong. He broke Rublev's serve in the seventh game and served out the match to complete the upset.
It was a historic win for Arnaldi, who became the first Italian man to reach the second week of Roland-Garros since 2011.
Arnaldi's victory is a reminder that anything is possible in tennis. With hard work and belief, anyone can achieve their dreams.
