Arnaldi Upsets Rublev at Roland Garros
Young Italian Stuns Sixth Seed
Emotional Victory for Arnaldi
Italian qualifier Matteo Arnaldi pulled off a stunning upset at Roland Garros on Friday, ousting sixth seed Andrey Rublev 7-6(6), 6-2, 6-4 in the second round. The 22-year-old Arnaldi saved a set point in the opening set and went on to dominate his emotionally-charged opponent in a match that lasted over three hours.
The victory is one of the biggest of Arnaldi's career, who is now into the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time. Arnaldi has been in impressive form this year, reaching the quarterfinals of the Rio Open and the semifinals of the Hungarian Open.
"I'm so happy," said Arnaldi. "I've been working so hard for this. I knew I could do it, but it's still amazing to actually do it." Arnaldi will face Karen Khachanov in the third round on Sunday.
